I wanted to post an essay about the Pacific ocean I wrote over the weekend, here ya go:
This is it; you can go no further unless you can walk on water. Go ahead, take off your shoes, your socks, don’t bother to roll up you pants or bunch up your skirt, let the ocean embrace you, and as you feel the tug of the undertow pulling you out to a place you can not see, open your eyes to what you are actually looking at.
Looking west, it’s a straight line from north to south, left to right. Sometimes it’s diffused by oncoming squalls. As the sun sets the intensity will burn your retinas if you stare too deeply. Except for a few islands as far as you know there is nothing else out there. And yet everything is out there. From a calm blue palette come the most ferocious swirling grays, biting rains, and winds that can knock you over. Where do they come from, there’s nothing out there?
Remain standing there, still in the water, with the weight of your clothes pulling you west as they fill with this thing called the Pacific Ocean. Where are you being pulled? Now, stop looking west and start looking inside yourself, look for the reflections of your emotions being presented in the scene before you.
Sometimes tranquility wears different slippers, hold your fire, but keep your finger on the trigger because the placid times will not last. Walk 20 steps to the east and sit on a rock. Let your clothes drip, let the ocean reclaim it’s self from your covering, back into the continuum of water, sun, wind and nothing.
You have no control, defile the Pacific as much as you like, but do not turn your back on it. Remain aware and on your guard, trust those around you to look out for your safety, because when you least expect it, the Pacific will win.
Sometimes I just go there and stand in it, feel it, and indulge myself in the flat line, the blue, the golden light, and the noise. There is nothing else but what lives inside me and this thing that is before me.
Peace
Richard
Well, it’s happening again, another great full moon, here’s the info:
WORM MOON: Tonight’s full Moon has a special name–the Worm Moon. It signals the coming of northern spring, a thawing of the soil, and the first stirrings of earthworms in long-dormant gardens. Step outside tonight and behold the wakening landscape. “Worm moonlight” is prettier than it sounds.
Also here’s some info about space debris, hey it’s important to me.
SATELLITE DEBRIS UPDATE: The first catalogued fragments of shattered satellite Cosmos 2251 are about to reenter Earth’s atmosphere. According to US Strategic Command tracking data, reentries will occur on March 12th, 28th and 30th, followed by more in April. Radar cross sections are not available for all of the reentering pieces; they are probably centimeter-class fragments that pose no threat to people on the ground. Visit http://spaceweather.com for more information.
And today’s image is?
On Feb 1st a tremendous new work on Minor White will be released Eye Mind Spirit: The Enduring Legacy of Minor White by Peter Bunnell. You can pre-order this from Amazon now but if you are a serious photographer, this is one you will want to own. On this MLK day, it’s really great to have this new book announced. Minor was in service of his students and photography, a true inspiration. I am nervous about even putting an image in this blog, but will do it anyway in tribute to Mr. White and all he taught me
Thank you Minor
Peace

I took a walk this morning. It was foggy and it had rained all day yesterday. The forest was beautiful. Spanish moss on the Monterey pines shone like cotton candy, deep shadows from where the bark on the trees had gotten wet and picked up contrast. The summer dust was a memory.
So much to be thankful for today.
Peace
Richard
